What the IRS says about certain coins and bullion, and why fineness and custody matter. This guide is designed to help you identify the rules, costs, and decision points that matter before you contact a dealer or move retirement assets.
Not every “investment-grade” metal is IRA-eligible
The relevant standard is the law, not a dealer’s marketing label. The IRS describes exceptions for certain U.S. coins, certain state-issued coins, and gold, silver, platinum or palladium bullion meeting statutory requirements when properly held. IRS collectible guidance.
Product eligibility and custody are separate tests
A bar can meet a purity requirement and still create a problem if the ownership or custody arrangement does not satisfy IRA rules. Confirm both before purchasing.
Proof, collectible and numismatic products
Some coins may carry large collector premiums unrelated to metal value. Do not assume an expensive or scarce coin is a better IRA asset. Ask the custodian to confirm eligibility and compare the premium over spot.
