Gold IRA vs Gold ETF

Compare physical bullion in an IRA with exchange-traded gold exposure. This guide is designed to help you identify the rules, costs, and decision points that matter before you contact a dealer or move retirement assets.
Physical metal versus a security
A physical Gold IRA owns qualifying bullion through an IRA custody arrangement. A gold ETF is a security traded through a brokerage account; its structure can provide gold-price exposure without you selecting individual bars or coins.
Liquidity
ETF shares can generally be bought and sold during market hours through a brokerage. Physical bullion transactions involve dealers, custody and settlement.
Costs
Gold ETFs may charge an expense ratio. Physical-metal IRAs can involve setup, custody, storage, premiums and dealer spreads. Compare total cost at your expected account size and holding period.
What each solves
If your objective is liquid price exposure, an ETF may be operationally simpler. If your objective specifically requires direct IRA ownership of qualifying physical bullion, the physical route is structurally different. Neither guarantees gains or inflation protection.
