How distributions from an IRA holding precious metals generally fit within IRA distribution rules. This guide is designed to help you identify the rules, costs, and decision points that matter before you contact a dealer or move retirement assets.

A distribution is still an IRA distribution

Holding metal does not eliminate the general distribution rules that apply to the account type. Tax treatment depends on whether the IRA is traditional, Roth, inherited, or another arrangement and on the holder’s circumstances. IRS Publication 590-B is the primary federal reference.

Cash versus in-kind distribution

A custodian may allow metal to be sold for cash or distributed in kind, depending on its procedures. An in-kind distribution generally means the metal leaves the IRA and becomes personally owned; the distribution still needs to be reported and valued appropriately.

Plan before liquidity is needed

Physical metal is not as operationally simple as selling a liquid security. Ask how sales are executed, how prices are determined, how long settlement takes and what fees apply.
