How a Roth IRA can hold qualifying precious metals when the account structure and asset rules are satisfied. This guide is designed to help you identify the rules, costs, and decision points that matter before you contact a dealer or move retirement assets.

A Roth “Gold IRA” is still a Roth IRA

The tax characteristics come from the Roth IRA. The “gold” part describes an asset held inside the account. The account must still comply with Roth IRA rules, and the precious metals must fit the IRA investment exceptions.

Qualifying metals and custody

The IRS generally treats metals as collectibles but recognizes exceptions for specified coins and certain qualifying bullion. The IRS also says qualifying bullion must be held by a bank or approved nonbank trustee. IRS IRA FAQ.

Funding matters

Contributions, transfers and Roth conversions can have very different tax consequences. Do not assume moving pre-tax retirement money into a Roth structure is tax-free.

What to compare

Focus on total account cost, dealer spreads, eligible products, custody, storage, sale mechanics and whether physical metal fits your broader retirement plan.
