Gold Coins vs Bars for an IRA

What eligibility, premiums, liquidity and storage can mean when choosing IRA-held bullion.

What eligibility, premiums, liquidity and storage can mean when choosing IRA-held bullion. This guide is designed to help you identify the rules, costs, and decision points that matter before you contact a dealer or move retirement assets.

Eligibility comes first

Whether you prefer coins or bars, the specific product must satisfy the IRA rules and your custodian’s acceptance policy.

Premiums and spreads

Sovereign coins, specialty bars and small-denomination products can carry different premiums. Compare the actual percentage over spot and same-day dealer buyback quote.

Liquidity

Common standardized products may be familiar to more dealers, but liquidity depends on market conditions and the specific item. Collector value is not the same thing as metal value.

Storage

Bars can be space-efficient for larger metal value, while coins can provide smaller units. In an IRA, however, physical access is constrained by custody rules, so personal convenience is not the same as with privately held bullion.
