A careful explanation of the IRS collectible exception for certain gold coins and qualifying bullion. This guide is designed to help you identify the rules, costs, and decision points that matter before you contact a dealer or move retirement assets.
The legal starting point
The IRS says an IRA generally cannot invest in collectibles, including metals and coins, but there are exceptions. Certain U.S. gold coins and qualifying gold bullion can fall within those exceptions. IRS IRA FAQ.
“IRA approved” is marketing shorthand
The IRS does not provide a dealer-style catalog of every product. The statutory rules and custodian’s acceptance process determine whether a particular item can be held.
Custody matters too
Even qualifying bullion must be held under the required arrangement. The IRS says certain highly refined bullion must be in the physical possession of a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee.
Confirm before purchase
Ask the custodian—not only the dealer—to confirm the exact manufacturer, weight, fineness and product.
